The Afgan Girl is making headlines again this week. This famous photo of Sharbat Gula was captured by Steve McCurry in December of 1984 and published on the cover of National Geographic in '85. At the time, she was in Pakistan as a refugee of the soviet war in Afghanistan. She'd been orphaned by Soviet bombings. Sharbat wouldn't know of the fame of her photograph until 17 years later, when McCurry and a team sought to find her. In 2002, the 1984 photo had been the only photo taken of her. Now, as an illiterate and private woman, she is being charged for falsifying identification to remain in Pakistan and not returning to Afghanistan. Her former Afghan village has been directly affected by ISIS. #history #historyisrad #natgeo #afghangirl #stevemccurry #eyes
Mark Twain was the pen name for American author Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Most known for his works, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer his works continue to shape U.S. education. He traveled extensively and wrote of his experiences. He would bury his wife and two of his three daughters before his 65th birthday. Halley's Comet is a comet that passes in sight of earth every 75-76 years. Twain was born just after a visit of the comet and predicted he would "go out with it" as well. He passed the day after the comet return. Twain's life story may be as interesting as his writings. #history #historythings #historyisrad #author #american #throwback #words #inspiration #growing
